Our Performing Arts classes have many benefits. This experience develops ongoing confidence, self-esteem and increases verbal communication skills. After years of observation, it is evident that this new found confidence extends beyond the stage. We see consistently, that the confident, articulate child finds it easier to make friends and to accept new challenges. In fact, we find that our Performing Arts program actually turns some children around, by giving them an avenue to express their emotions, to release energy and even inspires many children who could not read prior.
Our comprehensive program, incorporated and interconnected with the English and Social Studies curriculum, includes improvisation, character analysis, projection of voice through the use of mini scripts, classic literature, open ended dialogues and monologues that evolve into structured scenes with a presentation at our Fall Social Studies Fair. The entire school, including the audience, dresses up according to theme. Food is served and fun is had by all.
During the final Spring trimester of each year, students in all classes work on a special scripted production performed first as an in-house production. The program culminates as students utilize all the skills they have acquired during the year to create a scripted production. The play is performed for parents and friends in a fun-filled atmosphere. This production is always a highlight of the year for parents when they see their children come alive on stage. This confidence reflects the talents and skills of our students and their teachers. In fact, some of our shyest students have become our best actors.
We also find this introduction to the stage and to humanities and philosophy prepares older students for the fundamentals of debate.
