Discovery Institute Scholarships
All children have unique learning styles and thrive in different types of learning environments. Therefore, we strive to give children and their families yet another educational option, another alternative to enable them to achieve their own dreams. All children deserve the opportunity to attend a school that is focused on innovation and individual expression, so they too can ultimately be participants, rather than spectators, in the American dream.
Realization of the American Dream is based on our freedom to choose-- on options, ideas, efficiency and innovation. This dream is still alive in the American entrepreneur and it is this kind of idealism, imagination and vision that will give our children the tools to compete in a technologically complex global marketplace.
We believe:
- All children are entitled to a first class education.
- Families should be given real chances and choices in education regardless of financial circumstances.
- Parents, rather than bureaucrats have the best interests of their children at heart.
- Real choices in education will create competition that will make all schools better.
- Innovation and excellence are born from competition, not monopoly.
- Monopoly leads to mediocrity and stagnation.
- A competitive educational system will expand educational opportunity for all, employment opportunities for teachers and reward those who achieve excellence in education.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that quality educational opportunity is not only a moral, ethical and monetary issue, but also an economic necessity. It is obvious that we should not leave the education of our children to a roll of the dice of an educational monopoly.
Americans have fought for Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, and have abundance of choices in products they choose, but little or no choice in the educational options for their children. Complacency and mediocrity have been a direct result of this lack of competition in education. Now, is the time to fight for Freedom in Educational opportunities for all, for a redefinition of public education to include private sector competition.
Without competition, without focus, accountability and delivery of educational excellence and without literate skilled workers and without the dreamers, little innovation in education, business or any other field is likely.
The American dream is a vision of opportunity without limits, of rewards for hard work and of recognition for excellence. What is needed is not more of the status quo, but more choices, more competition in education that will make all schools better and ultimately, benefit all children.
Alveda King asks, "Is it moral to tax families, compel their children’s attendance at schools, and then give no choice between teaching methods, religious or secular education and other matters?"
Alveda King (niece of Martin Luther King, Jr.)
